Schools, parents worry about H1N1 flu pandemic
The information about the discovery of the first flu outbreak at a school has worried management boards of many schools in Hanoi, who are considering delaying the opening of the new school year.

The school that was the site of the wide-scale outbreak is Lomonosov High School in My Dinh new urban area. A male student of the school got a fever and cough after he returned from the trip to Thailand. He was discovered as infected with H1N1 flu. All students of Lomonosov school have been allowed to stay at home.
According to Lomonosov Headmaster Le Tien Dung, all summer classes will be stopped until August 3. Respirators have been delivered to all teachers. On July 30, the school informed students’ families about the flu situation.
“All students who are studying in the same class as the infected student are still in good condition. The school will keep in close contact with parents to keep up to date,” Dung said.
Meanwhile, a lot of high schools and primary schools in My Dinh urban area did not hear anything about the case until this morning. Teachers of Doan Thi Diem Primary School only heard about the case when they read the newspaper this monirng. 20 classes at the school with 600 students still gathered this morning.
Deputy Headmaster of Doan Thi Diem Primary School Dao Thi Thuy said that the school plans to open on August 5 for the new school year. However, if the flu pandemic becomes worse, the new school year will be delayed.
The information about the case at Lomonosov School has caused many parents to panic. Linh, who lives on Tran Phu street, related that she brought her son to have a medical check this morning as he had a cough. “The teacher asked me to take him to the hospital, saying that this is a must,” she said.
Prior to that, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Thien Nhan, when talking about the things schools have to do to prepare for the new school year, emphasised that schools must not open for the new school year if they do not have steering committees on fighting H1N1.
