Installation exhibition on war to open in Hanoi

July 19th, 2009

“Bom” (Bomb), an installation exhibition on war by Pham Van Truong, or Truongart, will be held at the Vietnam Art Museum, 66 Nguyen Thai Hoc, Hanoi from July 22-27.

Truong, 27, suffered great losses as a result of the war. His grandmother was burnt by napalm while another close relative was killed by a bomb. “The war has passed but its consequences still remain today. I feel the pain and serious impacts of the war on many generations of Vietnamese, also in the hearts and minds of people around the world,” Truong said.

At Truong’s “Bomb” installation exhibition, visitors will experience the feeling of being in a bomb crater when they enter a big room ornamented with broken pieces of glass and red paint, surrounded by sharp sounds. They will also see distorted and broken images of themselves in broken pieces of glass, signifying that everyone is an incomplete work because of war.

Images on broken pieces of glass also remind viewers that people are unexploded bombs, which contain great hopes and aspirations which sometimes they forget because of the cycle of life.

“Installation exhibition about war is a positive sign, a new way of expression of an old topic. It proves that the young artist is responsible towards history and art lovers. Pham Van Truong is successful in connecting the past and the present by using contemporary art, to rouse viewers’ awareness of war and the meaning of life,” said Danish Ambassador to Vietnam Peter Lysholt Hansen, who is also the chairman of the Cultural Development and Exchange Fund (CDEF), the sponsor of “Bomb” exhibition.

Truong, from the northern coastal province of Quang Ninh, graduated from the Hanoi Industrial Art University. He is one of the founders and masters of website mythuatvietnam.infor and the founder of Blackart group.

Since 2005, Truong has given some installation, performance and video art shows. He won first prize in the Performance Art Talent Show 2008 held by CDEF. Truong is working on a big project called “Question Marks” with the assistance of the Goethe Institute in Hanoi.

CDEF was established by the Danish Embassy in Vietnam in 2006 to support contemporary and experimental art in Vietnam and cultural exchanges between Vietnam and Denmark.
