Exemplary role-models honoured

The “Vietnam’s Glory” Programme was held in Hanoi on April 26 to honour the nation’s top ten exemplary role-models.

The programme, broadcast live on the VTV1 channel and Radio the Voice of Vietnam (VOV), was aimed at highlighting collectives and individuals who are awarded the title of ‘Labour Hero’ during the country’s renewal process and businesspeople who have made substantial contributions to community development.

The top ten role-models were selected from various sectors as ‘ordinary but noble examples’. They included Prof. Dr. Pham Gia Khai, President of the Vietnam National Heart Association, who has spent a lifetime conducting research and promoting the importance of public health and Pham Van Mat, director of the Vang Danh coal company who has always tried to improve workers’ living conditions. Among others were village elder KSor H’Lam who has devoted herself to helping ethnic minority people in the central highland province of Gia Lai rebuild their lives, and two young border guards, Nguyen Xuan Thuyet and Nguyen Huu Cuong, who have enabled ethnic minority children in the central province of Quang Tri to study at school.

Phan Phu Lin, a Dao ethnic from the northern mountainous province of Lao Cai, was also praised for changing the old cultivation methods of planting wet rice. Despite the harsh weather and poor working and living conditions.

Mai Son, former Deputy Chairman of the People’s Committee of the Mekong Delta province of Ben Tre, was awarded for his part in the building of more than 760 bridges and 700km of road in rural areas.

Other role models were Mai Bao, a teacher in the central province of Ha Tinh, and nun Thich Nu Hue Huong in the central highland province of Dak Lak.
