All 22 members of the five families heard a rumbling sound before the houses slid into the river.
Heavy rains were the main cause of the accident, according to Le Thanh Tung, deputy chairman of Nhon Duc Commune’s People’s Committee.
Duc said about 600 sq.m of riverbank, including a 286 sq.m residential area, was hit by the landslide.
The rear sections of the houses fell into the river while the walls of one house split open.
Estimated damage was worth VND100 million (US$5.56), authorities said. Tung said the riverbank section that collapsed was especially vulnerable to water erosion.
At 12:00 pm on Tuesday all families in the area affected by the landslide in Nhon Duc Commune were moved to a temporary residence.
