Hanoi to build more student accommodation
The Hanoi People’s Committee has decided to zone off a six ha site in the My Dinh II and Phap Van-Tu Hiep urban centres to build houses for students as dormitories in the city have become overcrowded.
This decision aims to realise the government’s policy, which encourages the building of rented accommodation for students. These projects are scheduled to begin in the third quarter of this year.
In another move, the city’s authorities have agreed to turn the planned Dong Mai industrial zone into an urban centre, using 50 percent of its area to build homes for students. The plan will be submitted for approval before June 25.
To increase the amount of land for similar purposes, the Ministry of Construction has asked the relevant agencies to examine plans for the future use of land. It has also allowed investors to allocate 20 percent of urban centre areas to build houses for students if appropriate.
The ministry is working together with other ministries, agencies and the People’s Committees of Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and other localities to speed up the necessary procedures to begin the projects for student housing in 2009 and complete them by late 2010.
Once operational in the second quarter of 2011, these projects will be able to accommodate an additional 200,000 students.
According to the ministry, Vietnam now has 400 universities and colleges, and 300 technical secondary schools, with 3 million students. However, just 20 percent of these students live in dormitories and the remainder have to lease their own accommodation.
