Brazilian footballers in Vietnam, dark and bright features

August 4th, 2009

Vietnamese football clubs have leaned towards Brazilian players in recent years. There is a community of Brazilian players in Vietnam now, with good and bad stories.

Brazil is a country of sunlight, wind, coffee and wild dances. Dancing and parties have become a part of Brazilian people, including those in Vietnam.

The “iron” coach of Da Nang club, Le Huynh Duc, was on a knife-edge because of Brazilian player Almeida. Before the 2009 football season, this striker, who scored a lot of goals for the team, suddenly granted himself a one-week holiday, without asking the coach’s permission.

The team was frightened by the “disappearance” of Almeida because nobody could reach him. Apparently Almeida had returned to Brazil on holiday to visit his friends and family.

Da Silva

T&T Hanoi’s Alex is another case. He performed very well at first, but after he earned a contract with T&T Hanoi, Alex became more interested in parties than in playing football. This Brazilian quickly left T&T Hanoi.

Martin Trindade was similar to Alex. He was once a good striker for Hai Phong. But after he became injured, Trindade didn’t focus on the treatment, but on parties and discotheques.

This has been a recurring problem for not only Brazilian but many foreign players in general. When they are tested, they always play their best. But after they earn their positions, their bad habits come out.

Da Silva, one-time star striker of Hoa Phat Hanoi, is “famous” for being a demanding player. He is a good player but his claims were unbearable.

Da Silva not only negotiated directly with his coaches, but also imposed awkward conditions. After each football season, he asked the club to double his salary. At one time he also asked to stay at home three nights per week and then he brought his family to the team’s campus.

Lazaro (orange)

Carlos Rodrigues had to leave Dong Tam Long An for his undisciplined behaviour. This player then moved to Ninh Binh, Binh Dinh and then Quang Ngai club.

At Military Zone 4 club, Lazaro could stand every rule, except for meals. He likes fish the most, but only eats big fish.

Once when the team went to Hanoi, Lazaro refused to eat a meal at a popular restaurant. The coach Vu Quang Bao had to take the team to a luxurious one.

Lazaro is trying to leave Military Zone 4 to seek to another team which will pay more.

“Vietnamised” Brazilian players

Kesley

But there are also examples of players who are talented and behave well. Kesley is one of them.

This player has lived in harmony with his teammates. He doesn’t get involved in gambling or parties. Kesley got married to a Vietnamese girl and they have a child.

Goal-keeper Santos is also another good example. Santos saves every coin to support his family.

Leandro (red)

Hai Phong Cement is lucky to have Leandro. This Brazilian player has won the hearts of Hai Phong fans and the team’s managers. His only entertainment is surfing the internet and chatting with his friends.

There are different kinds of Brazilian players in Vietnam but the community of Brazilians is very important to Vietnamese football, particularly the national championship V-League. The number of Brazilian players in Vietnam is expected to increase.
