Hanoi’s dumping grounds nearly filled up

August 11th, 2009

The Hanoi Environmental Protection Bureau’s chief Nguyen Van Luong told VietNamNet that three out of five rubbish dumps in Hanoi are nearly full.

The Nam Son rubbish dump in Soc Son district, Hanoi.

Luong said that after the capital city’s expansion last August, the total rubbish volume discharged a day is around 5000 tonnes, including 3500 tonnes of waste from the urban area and 1500 tonnes from the rural.

The Urban Environment Co., Ltd (Urenco) is responsible to collect and treat solid waste from the urban area. Other companies cover the waste discharged from the rural area.

Most of the rubbish volume is buried at five dumping grounds, including Nam Son in the Soc Son district (around 3000 tonnes per day), Kieu Ky in the Gia Lam district, Xuan Son in the Son Tay town, Nui Thoong in the Chuong My district and the Cau Dien waste treatment plant.

According to Luong, Hanoi’s waste treatment plants discharged around 750 tonnes of industrial waste. However, 637-675 tonnes are collected by hygiene and environment companies and 60 percent of this volume are treated by mainly burying it at the Nam Son dumping ground.

Toxic solid waste discharged by hospitals in the city are burned at the Cau Dien waste treatment plant, with a daily capacity of 5 tonnes per day. A hospital in Ha Dong district and 13 district-level hospitals have their own solid waste incinerators.

Luong noted that up to three of five dumping grounds in Hanoi are almost full. The Nam Son dumping ground will be filled up by 2011 if it continues to receive 3000 tonnes of rubbish per day but the daily amount received might rise to 4000 tonnes per day in the next two years. Currently, 6.5 out of 9 pieces of ground in Nam Son are full.

At the Xuan Son dumping ground, up to 10 of 11 pieces of ground are full. This site still receives around 100 tonnes of waste per day and it will be entirely filled up by the end of this year.

The Nui Thoong dumping ground’s two pieces of ground are full already. However, it has just put into operation a third piece of dumping ground, which can receive 100 tonnes of rubbish per day.

Hanoi will face a shortage of dumping ground in a very near future, Luong said.

The city is working on a plan on managing solid waste. It is going to implement some new models of rubbish collection.

Other solutions are expanding the Xuan Son dumping ground and the solid waste treatment area at the Nam Son dumping ground. At the same time, the city will build a modern solid waste treatment plant in Nam Son or Dong Ke.

District-level solid waste treatment facilities will be built in the districts of Chuong My, Thach That, My Duc and Phu Xuyen.
