HCM City needs over US$220 million to control landslides

August 26th, 2009

To prevent landslides on the banks of rivers and canals, HCM City needs nearly 4 trillion dong (over $220 million) to upgrade waterways.

The city currently has around 980km of rivers and canals. In recent years, landslides along rivers and canals have become serious. At this moment, the city has 114 places at high risk of landslides.

The local Department of Transportation has invested hundreds of billion dong to carry out 14 landslide control projects for 4000m of embankment. The city is currently implementing 13 other projects, accounting for an additional 3000m of embankment. However, these projects have not been very effective.

Dr. Dinh Cong San, from the Southern Region Institute for Irrigation Sciences, said that the city needs to have a comprehensive plan to counter landslides. The city should not only prevent landslides at the sites at high risk.

The Institute and the HCM City Department of Transportation have joined hands to conduct a survey of the banks of all rivers and canals in the city to develop a general plan to control rivers and canals, including the prevention of landslides.

To control the city’s rivers and canals, it is necessary to build embankments for at least 10 percent of the total length of the banks of rivers and canals, around 107km. Investment in this task is calculated at 3745 billion dong, equivalent to $208 million.

San said some sections don’t need embankments but rather trees to become ecological tourism areas while some others need to be embanked to prevent landslides and the encroachment of local people.

Experts believe that a comprehensive plan to control rivers and canals can help HCM City prevent landslides and facilitate the city’s management of rivers and canals.
