May all your first-footers be buffalos, cats, or horses this Tet

February 13th, 2010

According to senior Buddhist monk Thich Thanh Quyet, vice chief of the Buddhism Institute, the good “first-footers” this year would be the people who were born in the years of the Buffalo, Cat, Dragon or Horse.

A pagoda in Hanoi.

Near the year of the Buffalo, Mr. Tuan’s home was very crowded with women who were seeking advice as to what their future held in the New Year and what their fortune would be like in the Year of the Tiger.

Tuan, 40, sat in front of a computer. After typing the birthday and the time of birth of a woman, he printed an astrologic paper and read loudly what would happen to the woman in the next year and good times for her to do important things in the year.

Minh, a woman who runs a shop on Lang Ha street, Hanoi, was waiting for her turn. Minh said that she always goes to Ba Chua Kho temple at the year end to “pay debts” and sees Mr. Tuan to look for the right time for opening her shop in the New Year.

“Last year I opened my shop in accordance with Mr. Tuan’s advice and I had a good year for business so this year I came here again,” Minh said.

At the home of Mr. Hoa, a sorcerer, in an alley on Kham Thien street, Hanoi, incense smoke is very thick. Nearly ten women were waiting their turn.

The sorcerer told Mrs. Duc, a customer, that she and her husband were born in the year of the Mouse so the first-footer (visitor) to her home this Tet must be a person born in the year of the Horse or Buffalo. Duc said that she doesn’t know anybody born in those years but said perhaps she could ask for help from a relative in her hometown Thanh Hoa.

Another woman was told that she and her husband were born in the year of Tiger so this year they should not travel far from home to avoid traffic accidents. “I’m scarced but I will try to follow his advice!” the woman said.

After seeing the sorcerer, some looked happy and some looked sad depending on what they heard. Some said they would perform rituals to relieve themselves from of the bad luck.

Senior Buddhist monk Thich Thanh Quyet said that the first-footer should be an open and jolly person and families should avoid choosing a fastidious person.

He said it is very good to choose the first-footers for this year, the year of the Tiger, who are at the age of 32, 45, 50, 54 or 59 and avoid people of the year of the Monkey, Mouse, Pig and Snake.

The best time for leaving home in the new year is from 9-11am, 1-3pm in the first day of the lunar New Year or from 7-9am of the second day of the lunar year.

The good days for opening shops in the new year are the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 6th, he said.

The senior monk said that the Year of the Tiger is a good year for business.
