Vietnam to collect 610,000 units of blood

April 3rd, 2009

A press briefing will be held by the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion at the Hanoi Opera House on April 5 to call for public blood donations nationwide on the occasion of Volunteer Blood Donation Day on April 7. The institute will organize blood donation programs and expects to collect 610,000 units of blood this year, said Nguyen Anh Tri, head of the institute.

In 2008, 564,401 units of blood were collected but this was only enough to help 40% of the country’s hemophilia patients.

This year’s program targets to support hemophilia patients. Hemophilia is a hereditary disorder which prevents normal blood clotting so that when a blood vessel is injured in a way that causes bleeding the platelets that normally would collect over the injured area and form a temporary plug to prevent further bleeding are impeded.

Under this year’s theme, “Blood saves people-Don’t be unconcerned!” the event is a message to encourage agencies and communities to be responsible for the lives of patients who need blood.

Authorities have also organized an artistic program named “Drop of blood of love” to raise public responsibility for the lives of patients who need blood to survive.
