The country currently has 4.7 million disadvantaged children belonging to four groups – traded and kidnapped, maltreated, poor and disabled children -, reported the Ministry of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs (MoLISA).
According to MoLISA, there are more than 1.6 million kids who are listed as disadvantaged children under the Law on Protecting, Educating and Taking Care of Children, accounting for 6.55 percent of the total number of children under 16.
They are orphans, disabled, victims of toxic chemicals, HIV/AIDS-infected, street children, sexually-abused children and child drug addicts.
Disadvantaged children number 4.7 million if trafficked and kidnapped, maltreated, poor children and victims of accidents are added, accounting for over 20 percent of children under 16 years old.
The Association for Protecting Vietnamese Children’s Rights met on August 14 in Hanoi to discuss its action plan for 2009-2010 and strategy to 2020. The association decided to boost media activities to raise awareness of children’s rights and build a plan to protect children who are vulnerable to maltreatment and abuse.
